I was recently invited to take part in “Santa On The Chimney” at Chimney Rock State Park. Santa rappelled down the mountain and also met with children to hear their Christmas gift wishes.
I am lucky to call myself a full time writer and poet. I make my financial living writing custom poetry on demand for people all over Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Appalachia. I also write poetry and commentary prose on social media. These two arenas of my writing offer quite different emotions and interactions for myself and my audience.
I was truly appreciative to the staff of Chimney Rock for allowing me to show up with my typewriter and simply enjoy the season as I wrote children letters for Santa. It is events like this that make me feel the true joy of my calling as a writer.
I asked each child three things.
1) What are you thankful for or what did you receive last Christmas you would like to thank Santa for?
2) How were you “Nice” this year? What did you do or what can you do to show Santa you are a nice and helpful child?
3) What would you like for Christmas
I typed the responses, handed the children their letters, and they proceeded to sit on the lap of Santa and read him their letters.
